teasel | I'm trying this out, after my mother thought I was coconut oil mad, and bought me some for my birthday, along with two books. I didn't mind a teaspoon of it melted in heated V8, but I just mixed it with olive oil and spices (on potatoes), and I can still taste it. I don't eat much, and I'm feeling rather overwhelmed by coconut. How much do you use? And if you use it a lot, how long did it take you to adjust? Thanks. |
cathy | I bought a big jar, tried it all kinds of ways, don't like the taste. I now just use it as a skin cream. |
trillian | teasel, I've been using the oil off and on for a few years. There are those (like Ray Peat and Matt Stone) who say it's just fine to use the refined coconut oil, which is less expensive and doesn't taste of coconut. I use the virgin stuff, and find that I just feel better when I'm taking it. In the morning, I put a tablespoon or two in my smoothie. If I want some later in the day I have it in tea. |
SunChild | I put about a tablespoon in chia 'pudding' with cacao & honey. sort of boring these days but it's my medicine. When I first tasted it (9 years ago) raw, I ate it straight up. Then i found some raw recipes. So the easiest one was thar I mixed cacao and agave syrup and then ate it like a treat. I did that for many years. |
Stawr | I'll have a spoonful of it sometimes. I've also made my own shaving cream and leave in conditioner with it. |
Valentine | I've been taking a teaspoon a day, for over a year, I still don't like the taste. |
Ceres_Moon | I REALLY wanted to switch over to coconut oil for many things...cooking, baking, smoothies etc. But I just can't digest it. It's like stomach cramps within 10 min - and I'm not OK for 24 hours or so. I have the same reaction with "raw butter". Olive oil seems to be the only thing that doesn't bother me - but I know you're not supposed to use it for cooking. |
PlutoSurvivor | I love coconut oil in homemade granola. I think if you are adding coconut oil it to your diet for health reasons you could start out mixing it with other oils in very minute quantities. It doesn't require a huge amount of oil per day to benefit. I think sometimes we overdo what is actually recommended. |
PlutoSurvivor | Greeks, Italians, etc. have been cooking with olive oil forever!!! The quality of oil is important. Definitely should not be heated to super high temperatures. Cooking tip: if you are making pasta sauce the oil or fat isn't added until the end, even after the heat is turned off. |
PlutoSurvivor | I'm sure the cold pressed coconut oil is healthier than the heated or heavily processed types. |
Randall | Yes, heat destroys enzymes. |
mirage29 | Read some articles on it. I'll have to try it! Ceres Moon, I get reactions to things too. Goats Milk gives me the same reaction you just spoke of. Then I found out that Soy Milk was triggering migraines. I love coconut. Hey, I wonder what it would taste like to add a spoon of Chocolate Syrup? Or??? With a little lime?? Randall | Love that song. |
Valentine | I got some virgin coconut oil capsules, I'm now taking. |
Randall | Let us know if there's a difference. |
Randall | You should see a difference in the skin on your face first. |

I don't think there's much difference, though I prefer the capsules as there's no taste. |
Ceres_Moon | Very interesting about the capsules. |
Randall | They are probably concentrated. |
Stawr | I love the taste and smell of coconut oil. I will never add it to my coffee ever again. I have stomach issues anyways so I can handle a spoon of it. I enjoy, and I'm glad that I do since there are so many benefits. Good for digestion and good for the brain. I just make a solid perfume with it too! |
